Voters in Broome County will have a lot of choices to make on Tuesday. It's not just the presidential race causing excitement. Broome County has a large number of local races this election season. Our Melissa Kakareka tells us how the Board of Elections is preparing for a busy day.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Polling sites are set up. Last minute phone calls are being answered. And absentee ballots are being time stamped and organized. It's all happening in preparation for Election Day in Broome County.

"I really feel that we're ready and we've been preparing all year, even though we've had three other elections this year, we're really up and running and ready to go," said Broome County Democratic Deputy Commissioner Mary Pines.

About one thousand inspectors are scheduled to work at the polls on Tuesday. Because of the high turnout expected with the presidential election, officials have had to make different preparations when it comes to ordering ballots.

"What we do differently this year, we order 100 percent ballots for every election district in Broome County," said Pines.

Preparations are also being made to record the results. This year, the Board of Elections has created a "nerve center" with 30 computers and phones. It will be staffed with student volunteers from Johnson City High School who will help enter information onto these computers.

"The poll sites will be calling in here with the results and they will immediately be going into the computer," said Pines.

The Board of Elections says it’s also tested its website to make sure results become available in real time.

"The IT has improved and brought in more equipment so that we stand a very good chance of being online, the correct results, in real time," said Pines.
