SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Central New Yorkers joined a worldwide vigil to fight lung cancer. Upstate Medical Center was one of 100 ceremonies held in the U.S. Tuesday.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths. At the vigil, lost loved ones were remembered and thoughts and prayers went out to people fighting the disease.

Smokers run a higher risk of developing lung cancer. There are steps people can take to protect themselves.

"If they've been a smoker for many years or have a friend or relative who has been, they can investigate screening for lung cancer. It has recently been shown to actually save lives with a CT scan in high risk people," said Leslie Kohman, Upstate Cancer Center Medical Director.

The American Cancer Society says there are more than 400,000 lung cancer survivors living in the U.S. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
