WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- The crows are back, causing the annual crow hazing battle to begin again in Watertown.

Over 30,000 crows flock to the region during the winter and this year is no different.

Watertown has again hired a contractor to perform crow hazing activities in the city throughout the winter months. They'll be using lasers, distress calls and pellet rifles to break up the flocks and push them out of the city.

Officials say the warm air from the river makes it a comfortable environment for the crows, but the flocks also inhabit tall trees, buildings and residential neighborhoods.

"You've got water that continuously flows so the air around it is warmer so the crows come here because it is a more hospital environment for them," said Elliott Nelson, Assistant to City Manager.

The hazing is set to begin at the start of December.

A hotline where residents can voice their complaints has been set up. The number to call is 1-800-243-1462. There is also a website you can visit at www.airportwildlife.com/crows.php.
