BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The Association for Vision Rehabilitation and Employment in Binghamton has unveiled a brand new technology fully equipped for vision impaired users.
AVRE hires people who are blind or visually impaired for many positions throughout the company, which makes copy paper and other products.
AVRE held a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday to show off the nearly $500,000 Pemco Ream Wrapper. The new equipment will allow a completely blind individual to operate the machine in a way that increases productivity.
Employees who are visually impaired say they enjoy the independence of operating the specialized equipment.
"It allows me as a blind individual to run this up to date piece of equipment and to run it just like an individual who has 20-20 vision," Luigi DiRusso said.
The company will use the machinery to convert roll stock paper into copy paper for federal state and many local customers.
