A downtown plaza is making a business comeback. The Paddock Arcade in Watertown Public Square is booming with business. Two new stores have been added to the plaza over the past four months drawing more people to the downtown area. Carmella Mataloni has more.
WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- Shoppers in downtown Watertown are seeing the historical Paddock Arcade come back to life. The Arcade only had three running business back in 2006, but now that number is up to ten.
“I have been thinking about doing a sandwich shops here because I liked the location for years. However, I was waiting for a location with Public Square frontage and when it came up, I jumped on it,” said Vito Gourmet owner Todd Tarzia.
Vito’s Gourmet Restaurant was one of two businesses to open in the past four months. The Beauty Bar opened in July and workers say that it’s nice to see the changes the building has made in just a few short months.
Leah Jones, a hairdresser at the Beauty Bar, said, “Even when we first came in we felt like a lot has happened and a lot has come to the building since we came, so it’s really great. It brings a lot to downtown.”
One business that has stood through it all is the Paddock Club. The club started out as just one store front, but later expanded into five. The club president says that business expansion is why more people are coming downtown.
“It makes me feel wonderful, business is good. I see more and more people coming downtown as more and more businesses come in,” said Paddock Club President Robert Dalton.
Paddock Arcade business owners say that they chose to start their businesses here because of the building's history and because its location will bring more people back to the downtown area.
“I just really find that the downtown business area is starting to really see the Arcade as a destination and a place to go," said Tarzia.
“I like downtown. I remember growing up as a child that there was a lot of bars and restaurants downtown and I didn’t see that anymore as I got older, so I’m trying to bring it back again,” said Dalton.
And with another grand opening on the horizon, the future is looking sweet for the Paddock Arcade.
