BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Binghamton High School students are raising awareness about the dangers of drunk and distracted driving. Members of the school's SADD club held their annual Katie Titus tree lighting ceremony Friday.

The tree is covered in white bulbs. Students will replace a white bulb with a red one each time a person is killed in a DWI accident in Broome County this holiday season. Students have never had to replace a white bulb in the past and are hoping to continue that trend.

"Our message to the community is just be weary, be safe, and think of those around you. If you are in car with a distracted driver you are in danger. Think about your family and how they would react to your loss and just make the right decision," said Malcolm Barreiro, a BHS senior.

Katie Titus was a Binghamton High School student who died in a non-alcohol related car crash in 1996.
