CANTON, N.Y. -- When you hear the Christmas classic "I'll Be Home for Christmas" you probably aren't thinking of St. Lawrence University, but a portion of the proceeds of every purchase of that Christmas hit goes to the college.

That is thanks to the song's composer, J. Kimmel Gannon, a 1924 St. Lawrence graduate. In his will, he left 30 percent of all royalties from all his works to his alma mater. Whether it's the original recorded by Bing Crosby or a new recording by Blake Shelton, every time the song is downloaded or used in a movie or on TV, St. Lawrence receives royalties.

"For example, it was used in an episode of the TV show ‘MASH,’ every time that episode of ‘MASH’ is shown on any channel on any TV station anywhere around the world, we get a royalty," said Macreena Doyle, coordinator of news services at St. Lawrence University.

So far this year, St. Lawrence University has made over $35,000 since January and that's not including this holiday season. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
