CHENANGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Hancock family can breathe easy this morning after a young hunter was found alive and well. Search and rescue teams found the missing teenager in the Town of North Norwich late Sunday night.

Authorities say the 13-year-old was small game hunting with his father in the area of Whaupaunaucau and Ripple roads Sunday afternoon. The two agreed to meet up at 3 p.m., but the boy never showed up. That's when the father called 911.

Helicopters, canine teams and more than 50 people spent much of the night searching for the child. Eventually, a snowmobile unit found the boy a mile from where he split up with his father. Authorities say it's fortunate they found him within a few hours.

"Just the way the elements are, to try to spend the night outside, temperatures were going to drop down to 15. So it would be very cold and it's a lot easier to find him in that first 24 hours," said Jeremy Oldroyd, NYS DEC Forest Ranger.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the teen. He was reunited with his father shortly after being treated at the scene.
