NEW YORK STATE -- Millions of dollars in federal help are now ready for people who need help paying for their heat this winter.
The Home Energy Assistance Program, or HEAP, offers up to $600 to put towards utility bills. It's based on income and the kind of energy used.
The emergency benefit kicked on January 2nd to help those currently without power or who have received a shutoff notice.
According to the National Weather Service, 29 people died in the U.S. because of the cold in 2011. That's down from 34 the year before.
