SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- National Heart Month kicks off with Wear Red Day, supporting women with heart disease. Businesses, community groups, hospitals and schools are among some of the groups joining the Go Red For Women Campaign.

A rally at the Centerstate CEO building in Syracuse also raised awareness for the deadly disease Friday. Mayor Stephanie Miner was there in red to officially proclaim Wear Red Day in the City of Syracuse.

The American Heart Association estimates 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by heart disease, and it causes one in three women's deaths each year.

"For women, we don't have that Hollywood scene, the men clutching their chest in terrible pain. For women, it is the silent killer. It may be nausea, it may be dizziness, it may be a persistent pain in your jaw, or your back, or your arm," said Anne Messenger, Syracuse Go Red for Women chair.

To help spread heart disease awareness throughout the rest of the year, Syracuse is holding heart walks every first Wednesday of the month through the end of the year. Anyone can join the mile-long walk through downtown.
