During the winter season, cars are usually covered with slush, grime and dirt. And for many people, it sits there until the season ends. But mechanics say that's the worst thing to do. Our Cara Thomas tells about the importance of washing your car during these snowy months.

UTICA, N.Y. -- When winter strikes and the roads gets slick, drivers give a sigh of relief when they see salt hitting the pavement. But when they find out about the damage it actually causes to their vehicles, they might be cringing instead.

Tom Maugeri, owner of Maugeri's Auto Repair Inc., said, "Cars are very susceptible to corrosion in the brake lines, frames."

The longer salt has to accumulate in every crevice of a vehicle, the more it eats away and corrodes the metal, especially in New York, one of the most salted states in the country.

"I've seen things as bad as wheels pull away, frames rot so bad on some of the cars that the cradle, the engine cradles is part of the frame now on a lot of vehicles, that rots and the engines falls to almost touching the ground," said Maugeri.

But there is a way to prevent such extreme damage and it only costs a few dollars.

"The best way to get rid of it is under-car washes just sucking it up and going to that, well they used to be quarter car washes now I think they're two bucks," he said

For many people, car washes during the winter season may seem pointless, or they think they'll cause more harm than good. But car washes say they offer services that should put those concerns to rest.

For those who dread seeing their car dirty again within minutes, some car washes offer a multiple day guarantee. And for others who want to avoid frozen doors.

"We rinse your car with waters that are probably around 110 degrees, which warms the body of your vehicle to the point to the point where you probably wouldn't have to worry about any freeze ups," said Vincent Surace, the owner of Superior Car Wash in Marcy.

Mechanics say getting a car wash during the winter is a must in order to keep a vehicle safe. They advise drivers to wash their cars at least once a month. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
