COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- The Cooperstown School District is getting a major boost of support as they consider switching mascots.

The school has been known as the "Redskins" since the 1920s, but recognizing the offensive nature of the name, students in the combined middle and high school petitioned to have it changed. The move caught the eye of Oneida Indian Nation leaders, who are now offering to donate money to help pay for new jerseys that reflect the new team name.

Nation leaders say the students' actions deserve to be recognized.

"Their decision these kids have made to me, such an incredible decision that many of the professional owners, billionaires and millionaires of major league teams are either unable to make or refuse to make or admit, that sometimes some things that are offensive need to be addressed. Mutual respect is something that should not be controversial in our society," said Ray Halbritter, Oneida Indian Nation Representative.

The Cooperstown school board is seeking input from the community before it makes a final decision on a name change.
