STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. -- The K-9 Unit at the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office is back. It was disbanded over a decade ago due to a lack of funding.

But now, Deputy Shawn Shutt and his K-9 partner Daimon have completed months of training in patrol work, narcotics and tracking. They became certified in January.

The team will be responding to incidents throughout Steuben County. They've already had success locating drugs.

One incident this month led authorities to contraband inside the Steuben County Jail. Deputy Shutt said that it takes a lot of practice and patience to ensure a good relationship between a Deputy and their K-9 partners.

“Daimon will alert to me when he locates that find. He is an aggressive alerter, which means he'll either bark or scratch where he believes the narcotics is," said Steuben County Deputy Shawn Shutt.

Daimon will also be assigned to work with area schools under the Sheriff’s new Safe School program, which will be implemented during the 2013 to 2014 school year. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
