ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Elmira College is set to receive $2.25 million from the Regional Economic Development Grant Funds to be used for the Health Care Training Center.
The money will go towards renovating Cowles Hall to house the nursing, speech, and hearing programs. It will also provide space for new healthcare programs.
The college currently has about 170 nursing majors, but will soon increase to about 220. According to college leaders, the healthcare industry is changing, and the grant will allow nursing students to stay in the area at local hospitals.
"With an aging population and with health care delivery systems changing, more and more of the stress delivering that health care is going to be placed on nurses," said Mike Rogers, Vice President of Government Relations and Chief of Staff at Elmira College.
The total project cost is between $4.7 to $5 million. Leaders say some of the work will be done for students to use by fall 2014.
